What To
Know When Buying a
Water Heater
1. Quality If you install a quality brand name water heater like AO Smith you can expect them to last between 8-10 years. All the heaters we install carry a minimum of 6years warranty on the tank leaking & 2 years on the parts. Be careful when looking at water heaters to compare only quality heaters. The time to install a low-quality heater is the same as a high-quality one so be aware of the average life of any brand you are reviewing.
2. Water Usage Changes Things change. For a family of 2 a 50 gal heater can provide plenty of water. When it grows to a family of 5 with some long-shower-loving teenagers, 50 gallons of water might not cut it anymore. When replacing a heater, but sure to think about your water use now & in the future. If you expect changes, it pays to buy the right size the first time.
3. Sizing Water heaters can require different sized venting. If the heater is not vented properly the danger of carbon monoxide getting back into the house increases exponentially. Our plumbers know the health & safety requirements to properly size & vent a water heater. Be sure you match the vent size to the proper heater.
Anyone who has taken a cold shower knows the value of a good water heater. When the work right, water heaters require little attention and maintenance. When they don't, it's cold showers and/or puddles of water flooding the utility area of your home. Regardless of why you might need a new water heater, Mahoney Plumbing has the heater to fit your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
I have a 50 gal heater, can I go up to 75 gallons?
You absolutely can, there is however some minor piping that needs to be done to allow for the proper venting and installation. We'll gladly come out to give you a quote & some options, just call us at 847.432.030
What about 100 gallon water heater?
If you just need more water, instead of 100 gallon heater, many families choose two 50 gallon heaters. Once you get over 75 gallons you get into commercial grade heaters which cost upwards of 3x the price, so many homeowners who want more hot water choose to install two heaters instead to save money!
Is a tankless water heater right for me?
Tankless water heaters are a great option for some people. Dan Mahoney has a tankless heater in his home & loves it. Having said that we don't recommend them for every home.
The way a tankless heater works is they provide unlimited hot water by heating the water as it comes from the supply. In Chicago's weather they have to overcome some big swings in incoming water temperatures. In the coldest of times, the amount of hot water they can provide can be limited. This is only a concern if you have high demands like filling a whirlpool tub for example, because it could take a long time to fill the tub in the coldest weathers. The tankless has to add so much heat to the incoming frigid water it could struggle with the flow a tub spout allows (approx 11gal/min). You can still fill the tub with hot water, it is just going to take a lot longer to do it! However, if you are more likely to take a shower a tankless creates more than enough water to warm you for as long as you want to shower. Showerheads flow closer to 2gal/min so a tankless even in the coldest of weather easily produces enough hot water. This unlimited supply of hot water makes a tankless water heater a nice option for some people.
There are also some installation considerations to review, for example the piping to a tankless heater requires a larger gas intake, so the transition requires more than simply removing a standard water heater & replacing it with a tankless.
If you are interested in reviewing a tankless as an option, give us a call & we can walk you through all the pro's & con's to come up with the best solution for your home - after all, that is what we are here for!

If you need a water heater, when reviewing your options be sure to consider the points to the right on "What to Know When Buying a Water Heater". In addition, when considering size beware that while a 40 gallon and a 50 gallon water heaters use the same piping, when you upgrade to a 75gal heater it can require a larger vent and sometimes some reconfiguring of the piping.
