Things You Should Know
1. Warning Signs Many times gurgling drains in the basement are precursors to sewer backups. If you hear gurgling in the basement when a toilet is flushed, it may be your house talking to you requesting you call Mahoney Plumbing.
2. How to Limit Sewer Back Up If your sewer is backed up, limit your water use until the sewer line has been cleared.
3. Know Your Home Please take a minute to know and understand your house. Knowing where a shutoff is to control water or a cleanout to open drains can streamline things in an emergency.Shutoffs are typically in the basement in a mechanical or laundry room. Sewer clean outs can be inside or outside. Ask our plumber to point them out to the next time he's in your home.
Sanitary sewer lines, hidden underneath the ground, take care of waste & water with efficiency and speed - most of the time. Once a sewer has trouble, however, the odds of having trouble increase remarkably. Thankfully, Mahoney Plumbing offers a complete range of sewer solutions. From rodding to televising and complete dig ups - we will help you get back to normal and reduce your chances for future backup problems.
Sewer Rodding - Active Sewer Backup
When you have a backup in the sewer line caused by any number of things - from tampons to roots - sewer rodding will open the line so you can use your water again.
Warning: If roots cause a back up in your home, you will see them return. Tree roots in the North Shore area are a major problem.
Preventative Maintenance
For homes with problematic sewers, many of our customers are turning to periodic preventative sewer maintenance. Periodic maintenance reduces the necessary clean-up after a flood and can be scheduled at your convenience as opposed to during a time of crisis. Far too often homeowners deal needlessly with sewer backup, when preventative maintenance could have saved them trouble (and clean up costs).
We offer sewer rodding, chemical root treatments and jetting to prevent sewer problems.
Sewer Televising & Locating
The next step in sewer services, Mahoney Plumbing offers video televising of troublesome sewer systems. A televised sewer line gives the plumber 'eyes under the ground' to best diagnose why a sewer line is giving you trouble and allows Mahoney Plumbing to offer potential solutions.
Sewer Repair & Dig Ups
Sometimes despite preventative maintenance, a sewer line simply needs to be dug up and repaired. Pipes can shift in the ground causing breaks or can be so badly damaged from roots there are no other alternatives. When a dig up is required, Mahoney Plumbing is there to fix your sewer problem.
::A Word About Sewers::
If your sewer has backed up more than twice a year, it is time to consider some kind of treatment plan - from a dig up, to chemical treatments & preventative rodding.
There are sewer lines installed by the Romans more than 2000yrs ago that are today still perfectly functional. There are lines that were installed in the last 5yrs that can fail because of any number of reasons including poor ground and poor craftsmanship. Meaning the age or youth of a line is useless in predicting trouble.
Tree roots that enter into a sewer, however, is never a good sign. Tree roots will hang into the flow of the sewage through the pipe & over time will collect paper, feces, etc. causing your sewer to backup. As the tree ages, its roots (as a living organism) will grow larger meaning your sewer will plug up more frequently. A concrete basement floor that gets ½ inch in water in a 10ft circle is certainly less of an overall problem that a finished basement with carpeting, toys & home office equipment. Based on your situation, we can offer a number of options from the more permanent fix of a dig up to preventative measures.
