Two Highland Park Area Organizations Join Forces to Raise Money for Cancer Research
Highland Park, IL – May 2010 – A long time supporter of local community groups, Mahoney Plumbing is embarking on a campaign to raise money for The Rory David Deutsch Foundation whose mission is to raise funds to eradicate pediatric brain cancer. As a part of Mahoney Plumbing’s celebration of 50 years in business in 2010, the company is committing to raising money as a way to celebrate its success by giving back to the community and the many customers who have made that success possible.
Started in loving memory of Highland Park residents Mindy & Ross Deutsch’s son Rory, the mission of The Rory David Deutsch Foundation is to fund research in medical laboratories that study pediatric brain tumors and other devastating childhood diseases. With help from its supporters, the hope is to one day discover medical treatment that will combat these fatal tumors, with the ultimate goal of curing those afflicted children. Since its inception in 1998 the Foundation has raised close to $6.5 million towards the cause. The non-profit organization has no salaried employees, and operates solely through the generous efforts of volunteers. With low operating costs, the majority of all donated dollars directly fund the Foundation’s mission.
“Like most people, cancer has affected Mahoney Plumbing. My parents who founded the company, Fran and Bart Mahoney, were victims of cancer. . Then, in 2006, brain cancer took Denise Hill -a long time employee and friend. When we began thinking of running a drive to donate to a local charity, of course cancer research and funding was at the top of the list of causes we wanted to support,” stated Mahoney Plumbing’s owner Dan Mahoney. “When we started talking about the concept, Mindy’s foundation immediately popped into my head. I knew The Deutschs had started a foundation in memory of their son Rory. Having been long time customers, I knew immediately we could support their effort,” added co-owner Peg Mahoney.
Gearing up full throttle, both organizations are working together to get the word out about their friendship and how local residents can support the cause. To kick off the association in memory of Rory David Deutsch, Mahoney Plumbing will donate $1 for every Facebook friend and Twitter follower that the company has by July 22, 2010. To gain recognition of the drive, Mahoney Plumbing is asking existing customers to show support through email and invoice alerts. In addition, The Rory David Deutsch Foundation is alerting it’s supporters via Facebook and in person events. To donate to the foundation directly visit http://www.roryd.org/making-donation/making-donation
In the twelve years the Foundation has worked against this devastating disease, it has accomplished some remarkable feats. Recently the Foundation completed a $1 million commitment to the Children’s Memorial Foundation pediatric brain tumor research team headed by Dr. Stewart Goldman, one of Rory’s doctors. In addition, the Foundation is currently funding a $3.5 million research commitment at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, in North Carolina.
“I’m proud to be able to support the Foundation & the Deutsch’s as a part of our 50th anniversary celebration. It feels good and right to share our success with some of the good people and the community who have made it possible,” commented Dan Mahoney.

3.16.2010 Press Release
On A Roll: North Shore Company Celebrates 50 years of Business
Chicago, IL – March 2010 – Celebrating 50 years in business on the North Shore, Mahoney Plumbing is proud to announce its 50th Anniversary. Since 1960 Mahoney Plumbing has been the source for home comfort, offering solutions to local residents’ needs. In 2010, it marks 50 years on the North Shore and celebrates the company’s position as a leader in the plumbing, heating and air conditioning field.
For its 50th anniversary, Mahoney Plumbing will commemorate the occasion kicking off a year-long celebration beginning March 17, 2010 ending on Saint Patrick’s Day 2011. The celebration will feature specials, education and reminders. Believing that educating customers on preventative tips, the company offers insights on ways to prevent troubles like how to check whether your home’s sump pump is working; ways to prevent pipes from freezing and simple ways to keep your garbage disposal working.
Today the company attributes its success to the amazing people that make up the Mahoney Plumbing team. With some technicians celebrating 20 years (and more) with the company, it is clear that the company’s long term success has come from all their hard work.
“Over the years we’ve become a part of our customer’s lives. We’ve saved the day on Thanksgiving morning when the garbage disposal clogged from too many potatoes, stopped sewage from destroying the in-laws visit and updated bathrooms for homeowners to showcase at their Fourth of July bar-b-ques. We are here whenever they need us. I’m incredibly proud to be able to say that 50 years later we are still offering the level of service my father did,” said Dan Mahoney, President of Mahoney Plumbing.
Fifty years ago, Bart Mahoney Jr. began this company based on simple, yet profound, philosophies like “good ethics is good business”, “take off your shoes at every home as if it is your own”, and “when you sell from your heart, your pocket will be rewarded”. Pictured at the right is Bart taking a rare break with his grandson, then 2yrs old (circa 1990).
Since its beginning, the company has relied on professional organizations to stay abreast of the latest trends. An avid supporter of the plumbing industry, Dan Mahoney has held multiple seats on local and state boards and committees. Currently, Dan is on the Board of Directors for PAMCANI (The Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Authority of Northern Illinois). He also is a Trustee for the Local Pension and Welfare for the Local 501 Union and a Director of the Illinois PHCC (Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association). In 2006, Dan was President of the Illinois PHCC (Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association).
In addition to its involvement with professional organizations, Mahoney Plumbing has been recognized for its charitable works in Lake, Cook and McHenry counties along with a remote Boy Scout camp located near Antigo, Wisconsin.
Throughout the company’s journey, one thing has remained the same: the company’s philosophy that good ethics is good business. According to Dan, “It’s what great, enduring companies do and it’s what has made us what we are today. We’ve grown from a 2-man shop run out of a shoebox to the company we are today thanks to that enduring philosophy.”
