Battery Backup Sump Pumps
On the North Shore finished basements can be found on any block. Many homes take advantage of the extras space for recreation rooms with large screen televisions, lounge areas & expensive electronic equipment. If this sounds like your basement, you most definitely should consider installing a battery backup sump pump. Battery backup pumps have saved thousands of local residents from taking on water in storms when either a) their primary sump pump dies or b) the power goes out [which means the primary sump pump can’t work]

Mahoney Plumbing stocks & recommends the two pump systems listed to the right. You can check out the pumps & their complete details by following the links provided or by calling us at 847.432.0320. Both pumps we recommend are very good, reliable pumps. They've saved countless basements in the area & continue to do so!

In addition to giving you information on these pumps though, we wanted to provide you with a few facts you should know.

1.Battery Life. Beware the batteries on backup sump pumps are made to run around 7 hours, but since sump pumps don’t run constantly that translates typically to 24-48 clock hours. Determining how much time you have left is easier than you’d think. Most pumps have an indicator – some have number systems that display where the battery’s charge is at, some have green-yellow-red indicator lights showing a battery’s power & still others have a light that goes on when it’s time to get a new battery. When dealing with your backup pump the important thing is to keep your eye on it. The battery is not meant to last forever so keeping tabs on the life you have left is important to keeping your home dry.

2.New Batteries. First, if you need a new battery be sure the one you get comes charged if it’s an emergency situation. As standard batteries do not come fully charged; they are designed to be installed & then power up completely.  In emergency situations like the power outages of 2011, Mahoney Plumbing charges up batteries for those in need so the battery we install will get you through as much power-outage time as it can. Careful though when it comes to batteries being too proactive isn’t always a good thing. You do not want to replace a good battery with a “new” battery prematurely – let your battery do it’s job until it simply has no power left. If you are lucky the extra hours you get out of the battery, the power will return & you’ll skate away without having to invest in a new battery!

3.Expected Life. Take note of how old your backup system is as it’s age is a very good indicator of it’s reliability. These critical systems are not set-it-and-forget-it systems. They should be tested annually to confirm both the system & the battery will be there when you need them. While nobody likes maintenance like this, the costs of flooding almost always outweight the service call to confirm you've got a reliable systems. Typically these systems last between 3-8 years, with batteries needing to be replaced between every 3-5 years. Some systems last years longer & others need earlier replacement your annual maintenance will let you know where your system is operating at.
